I’ll love you forever,
I’ll like you for always,
As long as I’m living
my baby you’ll be.
– Robert Munsch
I read this quote somewhere and it got my attention. What a sweet way to express your love for someone! When I looked it up, it turned out to be a rhyme from a book, “Love You Forever”, written by Robert Munsch.
I quickly found out that it is a well-known American children’s book. But as you probably know, I am Dutch. And sadly, this book isn’t translated into Dutch. So I cannot really read it to my kids. But I loved to read it myself… The love a mother has for her child – and the love a child has for his mom – crosses all language barriers, right?
The book is easy to read, and the repetition of lines on each page makes it a joy to read with little children. And while reading you will certainly be reminded of how quickly they will grow up – and right then and there you’ll feel the urge to pick them up, and rock them back and forth, back and forth… And tell them again how much you love them. How much you like them. That no matter what they do, or how old they are, they will still be your babies.
A perfect gift to a child, a mother, a grandmother…
Personally I love the touch of real book in my hands. I mean, there’s hardly anything better than snuggling with your toddler on the couch and reading to him, over and over, right? But if you want to know what the book is like, in the video below it’s read aloud.
I think “Love you forever” can be a perfect gift for a child, but it can also be a present to a new mother, or for mother’s day to your own mother… You can find it on Amazon: Love You Forever.
The story behind the book is both heartbreaking and beautiful. Robert Munsch, the author, made up the rhyme – or song – after he and his wife had two stillborn babies. The song was meant for those two little babies… However, he couldn’t even sing it for a long time, because he cried every time he tried to sing it.
One day he decided to make a story around the song, and it was published as a children’s book. After a while though, his publisher noticed the book was selling very well in retirement communities in Arizona! It turned out the book was well liked among parents, grandparents, and of course they also bought it for the kids. It has sold over 15,000,000 copies. And you can order it here! 🙂
